Department of History
History is a very dynamic subject that justifies, clarifies and analyses the past events in the light of modern times. If you are looking for a course that offers not only immense Career opportunities but also indicates the right direction for future generations, BA (Hons) in History is just right for you. Do not believe those who say that history is just about memorising facts or regurgitating class notes. It has a golden future. The study of history at higher levels includes the study of historiography, historical research methods and studies of specific periods.
History offers three main specialisations — archaeology, museology and archival studies. With a background in history, you can specialise in these fields as most of these courses are offered at the postgraduate level. There are several universities across the country offering post-graduate degrees in archaeology, numismatics and epigraphy. After doing post graduate in the above specialisation you can also be an archivist, museumologist, heritage and conservancy professional.
If you wish to teach upper primary school or high-school students, a BA Hons in History & B.Ed will qualify you for the same. For this you have to appear for TET and SSC respectably. With a Masters in History and after clearing the NET or SET, you can apply for a teaching post in colleges or universities. In addition to teaching history in schools and colleges, one can also be employed as researcher in historical research organisations such as Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR). As a sensitive historian, you can write history books.
A number of people choose History as a subject at the graduation level in order to have an edge in the IAS, IPS, IFS, WBCS examination and the golden route to coveted jobs. If you wish to continue your engagement with history even after having cleared the civil service examinations, you can choose to pursue a post-graduation in the field and apply to work with the various government ministries/departments such as National Museum Institute, National Archives of India, Ministry of Culture etc to name a few.
A degree in history also offers you a set of a wide range of careers such as law, publishing, journalism and the media, librarianship and advertising. After all, history is not just the story of the vanquished from the perspective of the victor. In a nut shell, History ushers a bright future in its students.
