The Department of History of P.R Thakur Govt. College was established in 2013 at the campus of the P.R. Thakur Government College, Thakuragar, North 24 parganas, West Bengal and it started functioning as a full-fledged Honours Graduate Department with Dr. Chitta Sen Paramanik, Assistant Professor & HoD and only 2 students. At present Dr. Chitta Sen Paramanik is HoD of the Department and there are 1 Assistant Professors, 4 Guest Lectures and. Our faculty members of the Department regularly participate in seminar and conference at the national and international level and contribute to the new field of the discipline of History. All of them published articles in reputed journals and edited books. Some of them are engaged in research work and open up new areas of research.

The Department offers a three-year Honours Graduate in History course spanning across six semesters under CBCS. From 2023 the Department also offers a four-year Honours/ Honours with research Graduate course in History course spanning across eight semesters under NEP 2020. The thrust areas of the Department are focused in modern Indian history, however courses on ancient Indian history and medieval Indian history are also offered. History of Bengal is a mention worthy area of the focus in accordance with the contemporary trend of study of Local History. History is a very dynamic subject that justifies, clarifies and analyses the past events in the light of modern times. So to make the students aware of the tremendous complexity of past issues as well as to provide them with a holistic understanding of the contemporary world, the under graduate history syllabus includes courses like Historiography, Historical Research Methodology, Contemporary World, Women’s History, Cultural History, Intellectual History, History of Thoughts etc. Seminars and special lectures are held all around the year to familiarise the student to make their study exciting.

Students of the Department are sincere, hard-working and receptive. Some of our students are first-generation learners. Some of the students are very serious. Even some of the pass out students qualified NET, SET & NET with JRF. Some of our students are proficient in extracurricular activities.

The Department of History continues to work towards the Holistic development of each individual so that they might contribute towards the building of a more egalitarian society.
